What Is a Platform Scale?
Platform scales get their name from the way that they are designed. Instead of having a small box with a readout on it, like most standard bathroom scales, platform scales have a large platform on which bigger, heavier items may be weighed. These scales often have a readout that is on a post or other tower that rises above the platform - often to viewing height. Alternatively, they may be connected electronically to a readout on a remote panel in order to view the readings more conveniently.

A platform scale can be very good for weighing large objects. Because they are close to the floor, they're ideal for weighing pallets, boxes, or even livestock. Platform scales can be used in nearly any industry. They are often seen in doctors' offices and veterinarians' offices, and they work equally well on both animate and inanimate objects.
When buying a platform scale, there are several things that you will need to consider. What it is made from is one of those considerations. Depending on what you will be weighing with your scale, you may want one made from a sturdy, non-corrosive metal such as stainless steel, or a lighter metal, such as aluminum, for high portability. These scales give you many options, so you will be able to find the scale that is appropriate for your industry. A platform scale can be an excellent investment, and there are enough options that it's very likely you will find one ideally suited to your requirements.
You will also want to get a scale that is the appropriate size. If you are weighing smaller items you don't need a scale designed to weigh up to one ton. In fact, buying a scale that is too large or too small may affect your accuracy. Consider the size of the scale itself in relation to your loads, and look for something that exceeds your maximum loads by at least 20%. Be sure that you're thinking carefully about what you want from your platform scale in terms of features, like easy tare and auto zero functions, and be sure that you're giving yourself some room for growth and development.
A platform scale can be designed for loads of under 100lbs, or may weigh up to several tons, and the thickness of the platform can also vary. The larger the scale and the more it can weigh, the larger and thicker the platform will generally be. However, the material that the scale is made out of can also affect how thick the scale is. Certain metals, such as stainless steel do not easily corrode, and may be easily cleaned. But lighter metals, such as aluminum, can also have a great deal of strength. These work well, if the intended use is appropriate.
Because the scale is a platform, the load may be placed wherever it is convenient. However, if you place whatever you're weighing on the platform scale right in the middle, you get the most accurate weight reading and you ensure that you don't damage the structural integrity of the scale. In general, platform scales are solid, strong, and accurate. To get the best platform scale for your needs, shop around and make sure that you're getting a good value for your money.
