What is a Platform Scale?
Platform scales get their name from the way that they're designed. Instead of having a small box with a readout on it, like most standard bathroom scales, platform scales have a large platform on which bigger, heavier things can be weighed. These scales often have a readout that is on a pole or other tower that rises above the platform - often to head height. Some of them are connected electronically to readout on a remote panel in order to use the scale more safely and accurately.

A platform scale can be very good for weighing large objects, and because they are close to the floor, they're ideal for weighing palettes, boxes, or even livestock. Platform scales can be used in nearly any industry. They're often seen in doctors' offices and veterinarians' offices, and they work equally well on both animate and inanimate objects.
When buying a platform scale, there are several things that you'll need to consider. What it's made from is one of those considerations. Depending on what you'll be weighing with your scale, you may want one made from a sturdy, non-corrosive metal, or a light plastic for high portability. These scales give you a lot of options, so you'll be able to find the scale that is appropriate for your industry. A platform scale can be an excellent investment, and there are enough options that it's very likely you'll find one ideally suited to your requirements.
You'll also want to get a scale that is the right size. If you're weighing smaller items you don't need a scale designed to weigh up to one ton, and in fact, buying a scale that is too large or too small may affect your accuracy. Consider the size of the scale itself in relation to your loads, and look for something that exceeds your maximum loads by at least 20%. Be sure that you're thinking carefully about what you want from your platform scale in terms of features, like easy tare and auto zero functions, and be sure that you're giving yourself some room for growth and development.
A platform scale can be designed for loads of under 100lbs, or may weigh up to several tons, and the thickness of the platform can also vary. The larger the scale and the more it can weigh, the larger and thicker the platform will generally be. However, what the scale is made out of can also affect how thick the scale is. Metal, like stainless steel is not easily corroded, and can be cleaned easily, but some plastics and composite compounds can also have a great deal of strength. These work well, if the intended use is appropriate.
Because the scale is a platform, it's not designed to have something set right on an edge or corner. Place whatever you're weighing on the platform scale right in the middle, so you get the most accurate weight reading and so you ensure that you don't damage the structural integrity of the scale. In general, platform scales are solid, strong, and accurate. To get the best platform scale for your needs, shop around and make sure that you're getting a good value for your money.
