Portable Livestock Scales

Livestock scales are used to weigh small and large farm animals. These scales are generally found in the veterinary and farming industries. It is important to keep an accurate weight of your livestock for various reasons. Farm animal weight is used to determine the amount of food and medication to give the animal. Weight is also a factor in deciding if an animal is to be mated, sold or slaughtered. The performance of your farm animal may be directly related to weight gain or loss. Keeping an accurate weight log can help you monitor changes over time.

Having a portable livestock scale allows you to move the scale around to accommodate climate and/or animal conditions. There are different types of portable live stock scales:

Hanging Scales:

For smaller animals (usually about 200 pounds), hanging scales generally do the trick. These scales are most often suspended in the air on a boom or crane. They are usually lightweight, portable and do not require any platforms or weights. There is a sling that secures safely underneath the animal’s belly. This holds the animal in place while it is being weighed. Hanging scales tend to be cheaper than other livestock scales.

Platform Scales:

These models are used for weighing larger animals (up to and exceeding 2500 pounds). In weighing livestock you always want to be sure that your scale is durable, water resistant and has a low profile. Some profile scales have cages or crates to help the animal remain on the scale during weighing. Rubber mats are also available for comfort. The mats are easy to clean and may be hosed down after use.

It is not always easy to get livestock to step on to a scale. Going for a platform scale that has a ramp attached may make it easier to load the animal onto the scale. Using a scale with a lower profile, preferably ranging from the 1 7/8” to 2 ¾” high, is also more suitable for the animal.

Since accuracy of weight is of great importance in the farming industry, try a platform scale that is equipped with an excellent weight resolution of up to 0.1lb. Find a scale with a “weight average and hold” option. This gives an accurate weight even if the animal is moving around during weighing.  Look for a portable weight scale that is equipped with leading electronics. There are scales with a sensitivity of 1/10 of 1lb. These scales even display high levels of accuracy when weighing smaller animals.

For water resistance, your scale should have a sealed display housing and load sensors. The load cells should be made with stainless steel.
