Portable Hanging Livestock Scales

For those who own livestock, weighing the livestock is a necessity. The livestock may need to be weighed for both health and business reasons. Although there are many different versions of scales that can be used to weigh livestock, the hanging version is one of the least expensive choices. In many cases, the hanging version may even be a more secure way to manage the livestock when it is time to weigh them.

Some people own livestock for showmanship. In these cases, a daily weight can become very important. Small fluctuations in weight can make a big difference when the animals are being shown. Other people raise livestock to sell for meat which is heavily dependent upon weight. No matter what reasons a person has for owning livestock, health issues can always create concerns. If animals are performing poorly, or if they simply seem ill, a weight check can help to determine if there might be cause for alarm. Just as with humans, being able to detect problems early can help in the treatment of any potential problems.

Just as there are many reasons for needing to weigh livestock, there are also many different types of scales that can be used to do this. Some of the scales are of the platform variety. These scales are particularly useful for very large animals. However, there are a few disadvantages to this type of scale. They are generally not extremely portable. Hanging livestock scales can be very portable. They can be taken to where the livestock are, instead of bringing the livestock to the scale. Also, the hanging scales tend to be much less expensive than the platform scales. So, if the livestock that need to be weighed consist of smaller animals, hanging scales might be the best choice.

The hanging versions of the scales can be attached to a boom, a crane, or some other similar structure. Usually the hanging scales have a strap that is placed beneath the belly of the animal. Then the animal can be slightly lifted so that the hanging scale is supporting its weight. This might also be the better choice to hold the animal more securely, while being weighed. Once the weight registers on the scale, the animal is lowered. The strap is loosened and the animal can be sent on its way.
